NASI UDUK IBU SUM – Mangga Dua, Jakarta

October 9, 2017

If you looking a proper meal for supper in Kota / Mangga Dua area, Nasi Uduk Ibu Sum is the only answer! Opening at 10 PM every night except on Saturday nights when it’s closed, Nasi Uduk Ibu Sum is always swamped with hungry customers. As one of legendary and most famous Indonesian street food, Nasi Uduk Ibu Sum offers nasi uduk Betawi (steamed rice cooked in coconut milk) with an array of dishes to choose from to go along with the rice.

Located at Jalan Mangga Dua, if you’re heading from Stasiun Kota then it’s on your left, before Pasar Pagi Mangga Dua and ITC Mangga Dua. Look for Indomaret on your left and the place can be easily spotted from the line of parked cars right before it. True that they open at 10PM, but we highly suggest you come earlier before 10 PM since people lining up when they haven’t even turned on the lights yet. You’ll see the magic that less than 10 minutes since they’re open and lights were lit simultaneously, there will be already 2-3 rows of parked cars in front of them!

The place is humble, far from fancy, but clean enough and quite spacious. There are around 20 tables with plastic chairs. The first time we went there, we arrived early before 10 PM when is still dark, and some customers were already there waiting patiently. Right on 10 PM when the light was turned on, the staff began bringing out the food to place in the serving area. The service was quite fast, so we didn’t have to wait long to be served.

The fragrant aroma of coconut milk and spices from its infamous Nasi Uduk just make me more hungry. There were a lot of dishes in front of you to choose from, such as fried bee hoon, fried noodle, eggs (Balado, sunny side, omelet), fried chicken, squid, pickles, sauteed mushroom, petai, semur jengkol, perkedel (potato croquette), tempe, jengkol, tumis kikil (sauteed cow’s knuckle), bakwan, and other fritters. Maybe you’ll be confused to decide what to eat since there are more 30 dishes to choose from!

We opted a plate of nasi uduk topped with fried bee hon, fried chicken, and Balado egg. We also tried the sauteed mushroom, petai, semur jengkol, pickles, and of course not forgetting the tongue-burning chili condiments and kerupuk (crackers). They have many kinds of chili condiments, but the best for us is sambal kacang (peanut sauce), that perfectly paired with nasi uduk.

It was a simple dish but really delicious. The rice was fragrant, warm, and fluffy but it’s lack of coconut milk flavor, to be honest. The dishes were also tasty, especially their fried bee hoon, fried chicken, and Balado eggs. As for drinks, hot tea will be the perfect companion for sure.

Overall, we had a good experience and went home with a happy tummy. Nasi Uduk Ibu Sum is definitely one of the best places to eat nasi uduk in Jakarta. They offer proper and satisfying nasi uduk meal at reasonable price. The price ranging IDR 15,000 – IDR 35,000 depending on what you eat. Not too cheap of course, but it’s still really worth the price tag to enjoy the fresh cooked meal on the night and no wonder if they also packed with peoples.
