For people living in Indonesia and some other parts of the world, Indomie’s packaging is iconic. But as many of us know, after many home experiments, the real-life product doesn’t match the picture. Or does it?
A trend started in Surabaya, fueled by memories of childhood disappointment, has became mie mirip, or “similar mie.” Now you have those springy instant noodles topped with the perfect bulls-eye fried egg, mini prawns or chicken thigh, fresh sliced tomato and lettuce, plus a little acar to top – served to you in real life.
This Instagram-ready food trend has finally come to Jakarta at Mix Diner and Florist (which looks like an American diner mirip) located at the rest area of the Mampang Pertamina station on the corner of Jalan H. R. Rasuna Said and Jalan Kapten Tendean. This 1950s-style diner is kitted out with rockabilly Indonesian music, Pop Art relics and posters, and vinyl-covered seating. It feels like you’ve walked into another era. And it’s also a working flower shop (what?)!
In addition to their picture-perfect food, there is a photo-booth area situated near the entrance, equipped with ironic mustaches and thought bubbles for your perfect tongsis #selfie. And let’s be honest, Rp. 20,000 isn’t too high of a price to pay to see an Indomie serving suggestion in real life and to take an amazing Instagram photo that will amazing our friends and get them to double tap.
Mix Diner and Florist, SPBU Mampang, Jl. Kapten Tendean, Mampang, South Jakarta, p. 62-812/1237-8048. Hours: Tues-Sun 12pm-10pm.
