Sometimes you just want a fulfilling hamburger or a comforting mac ’n’ cheese. American cuisine might not have the highest reputation at the world’s table, but when it’s done well, it’s delicious. Here are some of our favourite spots for American food (And no, American Grill didn’t make the list):
The Goods Diner
After training and working in California, chef Erlene Susanto brought good vibes and great-tasting American favourites to The Goods Diner. Some truly American dishes found on the menu includes corned beef hash (on the all-day breakfast menu), a super decadent mac ’n’cheese, and the fried-chicken sandwich, one of the most popular items from the old Goods Dept. menu. But our pick of the menu is the General Tsao’s Chicken – sounds Asian, but totally an American invention.
The Goods Diner, Fairgrounds, SCBD Lot 14, Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, SCBD, South Jakarta, p. 62-21/515-2969. Hours: Mon-Thurs 8am-11pm, Fri-Sun 8am-2am.
Say “Jimmy Dean” and watch your American friends instantly salivate. In a city ruled by European-style sausage (although there’s nothing wrong with that!), American sausage patties are a delicious rarity. Baconerie, the hottest new spot in Kemang, serves up their sausage round – and homemade. In fact, Baconerie’s bacon, ham, pastries and breads, and even its tomato jam are made in house!
Baconerie, The Grove @ Kemang, Jl. Benda 1C, Kemang, South Jakarta. p: 62-21/7883-8291. Hours: Tues-Sun 7am-7pm.
Spanky’s Ribs and Martinis
Fall-off-the-bone ribs and delicious classic cocktails? Say howdy to Spanky’s Ribs and Martinis. The star here is the pork ribs, which you can order in half- or full-rack, but don’t overlook other their other American treats including the stuffed jalapeno poppers, pile o’ onion rings, and the Spank Me! sandwich, which can be filled with pulled or carnitas-style pork. Even if martinis aren’t your Happy Hour faves, Spanky’s has plenty of other great drink deals to accompany your meal.
Spanky’s, Jl. Kemang Raya 24A, Kemang, South Jakarta, p. 62-21/718-2876. Hours: Mon-Sun 11:30am-1am.
Chili’s Grill and Bar
The Chili’s Grill and Bar in Central Jakarta is so authentic that you’ll swear you stepped out of Sarinah and straight into the Midwest. From décor to menu to the peppy staff, this Chili’s is super genuine. Chili’s signatures including the Old Timer Burger, country-fried steak, and Quesadilla Explosion Salad are all available – and served in American-sized portions. As an added bonus, it’s halal, so everyone can enjoy a Skillet Queso.
Chili’s Grill and Bar, Sarinah Building, Upper Ground floor, Jl. MH Thamrin, CBD, Central Jakarta, p: 62-21/314-6587. Hours: Mon-Thurs 11am-11pm, Fri-Sat 11am-midnight, Sun 11am-midnight.
Dining at the Ninety-Nine restaurant at Grand Indonesia has all the fun of eating alfresco with none of the heat, pollution, and noise. The restaurant branch of Ranch Market has a menu with Indonesian and Asian dishes (because not everyone in your party is going to be down with American) and a fantastic Western selection. Our top picks here are the rotisserie chicken, hot dogs (available with chilli), and the fully-loaded baked potatoes. But save room for dessert, Ninety-Nine boasts an impressive pastry selection including American treats like carrot cake, apple crumble, and rich chocolate brownies.
Ninety-Nine, Grand Indonesia Mall, Jl. Thamrin, CBD, Central Jakarta, p. 62-21/2358-1196. Hours: Mon-Sun 10am-10pm.
Ninety-Nine, Ranch Market, Jl. Pesanggrahan no. 2, Puri Indah, West Jakarta, p. 62-21/5830-4797.
Ninety-Nine, Lotte Shopping Avenue, Ciputra World, Jalan Prof. Dr. Satrio, Kuningan, South Jakarta, p. 62-21/2988-8945.
