Listen up people! Whisky is the trendiest drink to have these days. It is the next big thing after wine and it has swept its way across Asia from China to even Indonesia.

Whisky is no longer associated with a bunch of stuffy old men sniffing their glasses by the fireplace, but instead has a trendier demographic that is more fun and youthful. With the rise of Japanese whiskies globally, the trend can only get bigger. In Jakarta, the new lounge Artoz Bar is not only the latest addition to the city’s fashionable scene, but it is also the place where you can find the most complete whisky list in town. With a preference to be known as a whisky library, Artoz Bar is a fine and slightly hidden lounge, and as the name indicates, Artoz Bar is the latest invention from the genius mind of Chef Gilles Marx who founded the successful Amuz next door, Auroz and Energy Cafe. Breaking his habit of creating restaurant outlets, Artoz Bar is a dedicated whisky lounge that has a comprehensive collection, as well as cognac and Armagnac. Over 150 variants of single malt and blended whiskies, 50 types of cognac and Armagnac coming from all over Scotland as well as Japan, America, Canada, Ireland and France. Highlights here include a 40-year old Bunnahabain, Port Ellen 1982 30YO Doughlas Laing single cask, Talisker Connoisseur Choice 1951 21YO to Tesseron Extreme, Lheraud Petite Champagne 1950 and Baron Legrand 1950. It is definitely a list that can impress any enthusiast.
Gilles Marx’s Artoz Bar is oozing with the aura of a sophisticated yet masculine gentlemen’s club but in a more contemporary manner. Designed by Idris Samad, who created Amuz, this 225sqm whisky lounge has a subtle yet elegant ambience using wood in somber tones to create that masculine feel. A whisky gallery made of glass, iron and copper stands as a stunning showpiece that will definitely catch your attention as you enter this place. On the right side is a private room in red that echoes the private room in Amuz. All around the lounge we can see leather sofas and armchairs in various shapes giving dynamics to the entire room. In one corner you can also find a semi-private area that can fit up to 15 people.Click to view slideshow.

Like any of Gilles Marx creations, Artoz Bar also serves amazing food to balance its great whisky collection. Adjusting to the lounge concept, Gilles has created a selection of Mediterranean style tapas including cold cuts, seafood and hot tapas, to others such as cheese boards, snacks and sandwiches. If you are in dire need of big main course, you can choose from grilled king prawns, grilled Tokusen wagyu beef rib eye or Amuz Dover sole meuniere, which is Gilles’ signature. On my visit, scrumptious highlights such as grilled marinated Tokusen wagyu flank steak finger and crispy US pork belly lardons (from the hot tapas selection) to marinated Spanish octopus and white anchovies on roasted tomato baguette (from the seafood selection) were not only memorable but really created an addiction in my taste buds.
Overall, Artoz Bar is a great whiskey lounge. Aside from a stunning whisky collection and tasty food, they also have serious jazz music performances by many of Indonesia’s seasoned jazz musicians including Idang Rasjidi for one. Top that with a cigar in your hand (coming from their great cigar collection) and your whisky experience in Artoz Bar will be just perfect!
