The classic ambience of Prime Cuts’ interior is sophisticated yet lots of fun.

After quite a few years of bistro movement in Jakarta, it is quite refreshing to see the revival of the classics. Aside from the French cuisine movement, we are finally seeing the revival of classic steak house concepts in Jakarta. Introducing the newly open Prime Cuts.
Located in City Plaza, Prime Cuts is a contemporary version of the classic American steak house that we used to know back in the 90s. A glass wall with European black latticework makes the façade of the restaurant, while inside, the restaurant is divided into a dining room, bar and a private dining room, all dominated with maroon mahogany parquet contrasting with a white ceiling and table linens, and lemon yellow quilted sofas. Surrounding the entire restaurant is a deep mahogany wall decorated with postcard pictures from America’s golden era post World War II.
Opened just two months ago, Prime Cuts is focusing on kobe, wagyu, Australian organic natural grass-fed, Argentinian grass-fed and Aberdeen Angus cuts. Selected favorites such as strip loin, T-bone, rib, tenderloin and even côte de bœuf cuts are offered with five different cooking levels from rare to well done. I love how they actually put the temperature range and duration for each cooking level on the menu. This way you can order the steak exactly how you like it. During a recent visit, my 350g Aberdeen Black Angus 1824 rib was cooked medium exactly to my request. With just salt and black pepper to season, the rib was satisfyingly fresh and juicy. Enough for two people, this rib comes in at the quite reasonable price of IDR 450K. To add more flavour, you can choose Prime Cuts’ various sauces from my tasty and tangy favourite, red wine, to the usual suspects such as mushroom, Béarnaise, Hollandaise, BBQ, and even some special ones such as bourbon, café de Paris butter, marrow, and their rendition of the local rendang sauce.
If the meat alone is not enough, perhaps you could also add some of the side dishes. You can choose from the total of 18 sides including vegetables, potatoes and classic macaroni cheese. We had five dishes of which the hash browns, creamed spinach and cauliflower mornay were a delicious riot. Now, if you are not a big eater and lean more to the seaside, not to worry. Classics like the delightful Boston seafood chowder for starters, or salmon steak with beurre blanc sauce will definitely make great subtitutes for the meat.
To enjoy your great steak moments at Prime Cuts, a beautiful wine is a must. Luckily they have quite an extensive wine list with many priced below IDR 1 million. During our visit, the bartender was quite jolly and creative and we enjoyed a few of their signature gin and tonics using Tanqueray 10 and Hendriks. They are not only beautiful to look at but also addictive and more than generously sized as well.
Overall the menu at Prime Cuts is quite focused and really revived the classic to all its glory. I was gleefully happy to see the jumbo prawn cocktail back on this restaurant menu. Bringing back the classic is definitely not a bad idea at all!
