Firstly, where are you from in Bali and how did design become a passion for you?

I was born and raised in Denpasar, Bali. Design is a passion of mine because it makes me feel like I have my own world. Whenever I design illustrations, it feels like I’m on my own limitless and challenging adventure. Imagination, fantasy and inspiration is what I aim for whenever I’m designing. I love what I do.

When you first received the brief for ‘ What the Truck’, what excited you the most about the creative process ahead?

I want to gain as much experience as I can. When I heard this What The Truck project I was really excited and eager in showing what I can do as an illustrator, an awesome challenge for me.

There are a lot of illustrative components – what is your process?

The process is a vector combined with brush texture. I started by thinking through the design concept, which I sketched out manually on paper. I then scanned the design and finished it off digitally on the computer with a design base application.

We love the sunrise/sunset Bali vibe, where did the inspiration for your design come from?

Of course, I got this inspiration from the beaches around Bali with their stunning sunrise and sunset ambiance.

What does your design represent?

My design represents the local community in Bali, that’s why I used cartoon illustrations that is relatable to everyone. I’ve also used bright colours to represent uniqueness and excitement.

The design has Balinese concepts, what are these and why did you use these concepts in particular?

I used the rich and beautiful culture of Bali, through the wardrobe of the characters and also some traditional elements. Why? I’m exceptionally proud of being Balinese, with its amazing tradition and culture. I also want people coming in from around the world to know the beauty of Bali.

The design features the iconic chef as the mascot, does he have a name and is this based on anyone in particular?

The mascot is called Pak Made, a common name in the island. And my father is also called Made.

How will you spend your prize money? Tacos?

The prize is a big boost towards me becoming even better in illustrating and design – using it to invest much more in design, and hopefully a better future.

You study Visual Communications Design, where do you hope to be in 5 years time?

I want to be a professional illustrator that’s known internationally. I want to tell the world about the beauty of Bali through my illustrations.

And finally, what is your favourite flavoured taco from What The Truck?

I love the Babi Guling taco! It’s just so good!

So head over to bustling Seminyak and check out the awesome design Yudhi’s created on the VW Combi for yourself and, whilst there, don’t forget to order yourself a tasty taco. Follow Yudhi’s recommendation – the Babi Guling (aka suckling pig), as it’s one of Bali’s most famed dishes. And naturally, you’ll need a refreshing mojito to wash it down with!
