There are few things more satisfying than the very first bite of a martabak slice still hot and fresh off the griddle. This yummy Indonesian snack that is most commonly found from the street vendors comes in two versions – sweet and savoury – and as some of these new places prove, there is no limitations to what flavour combinations you can find. Since we all have pretty big sweet tooths over here, we’re particular to martabak manis, the sinfully addictive dessert that has been getting the gourmet treatment lately. You think durian martabak is exotic? Just see what else we’ve found.
Martabak Bandung Raya
Since 1981, locals have been flocking to Martabak Bandung Raya’s street-side warung for their classic martabak manis and martabak telur. Night owls will be pleased to know that this popular spot is open 24-hours, so you can get your martabak fix at any time of day. We love getting their martabak manis komplit with the works: meaning peanuts, melted chocolate sprinkles, sesame seeds, cheese, and condensed milk. DE-LISH!

Martabak Top Bandung Gendut
Even though it’s situated in a modest street stall near Pasar Santa, Martabak Gendut is in a league of its own when it comes to the traditional martabak. We can’t get enough of their martabak manis keju, a sweet martabak topped with a mixture of melted ooey gooey cheese and condensed milk. We know we’re supposed to be featuring sweets here, but you might as well also get their savoury martabak telur bebek, a deliciously crispy duck egg martabak that will keep you coming back for more!

Martabak 65A Bandung Asli Pecenongan
Now, everyone please take a minute to thank Martabak Pecenongan for bringing Toblerone and Nutella flavoured martabaks into the mix! Ever since this legendary branch introduced gourmet versions of the sweet martabak to the world, we’ve seen more and more vendors experimenting with all kinds of innovative flavours as you’ll see up next. Make no mistake, these guys are the originals when it comes to these sweet upgrades, and even with more competition the queues at Pecenongan remain long. A must-try!

“Boss, martabaknya, boss!” No doubt you’ve seen one of Martabak Boss’s cheerful yellow containers parked somewhere around the city. How can you miss it, with its clever murals featuring mascots looking like some sort of martabak mafia. Martabak Boss is where flavours really get interesting – we like their pandan-based martabak with Ovomaltine topping, but you can pimp your martabak any way you like. Start with the base: would you like original yellow, pandan, chocolate, or matcha? Next, pick from a wide range of toppings that include classic Meises, nastar, durian, Nutella, Skippy peanut butter, and even melted Green Tea Kit Kat. Be as inventive as you like!

Koffie Warung Tinggi
Too afraid to try street food, but still want a taste of this delicious treat? Koffie Warung Tinggi has evolved from warung status to modern coffee house. Around since the days of Colonial Batavia, Koffie Warung Tinggi is now a heritage brand serving delicious bites of Indonesian-Dutch-Chinese food. Their mini-sized martabak manis is no less delicious than its street-side counterparts, perhaps even giving the gourmet guys a run for their money with its Ferrero Rocher topped martabak manis. They even have a comprehensive cheese selection with a choice between young and old Gouda, cheddar, or mozzarella. Talk about fancy!

If you follow any of Jakarta’s most popular food bloggers on Instagram, chances are this curiously darker hued martabak has popped up on your feed. Martabak Blackpool has two choices when it comes to its deliciously sweet base: original yellow and blackforest. What’s quickly become a social media hit is their Cream Cheese Oreo Blackforest flavoured martabak manis, with its melted cheese oozing gloriously from the sides. #foodporn this is indeed.
