Lara Djonggrang is one of the one restaurants in the world that could honestly pass for a museum. It’s concept is based on the legend of a beautiful princess from Java, whose father was killed by a powerful man and who wanted to marry her. The whole restaurant revolves around her statue.
The restaurant is divided into various rooms, each filled with genuine antiques, and designed around a theme, giving immense character and variety to the whole place. There’s a bar area, dramatically overlooked by wayang kulit (shadow pupets), and VIP rooms dedicated to President Sukarno and Chinese deities (not the same room!).
Whenever you look, there are objects d’art, carefully collected and placed, it is an amazing experience, one which you should not miss. Oh and yes, the food does reflect the whole theme. It’s based on the royal journeys through Java in the 14th century, and is unlike anything you will have tried before. Royal Indonesian cuisine.
If you haven’t been here, go and absorb a huge hunk of Indonesia’s cultural history – and a great dining experience.
